The castle grows two officially confirmed ways: consuming villages, sheep and smaller forts, and growing after each boss. Upgrades come from strengthening your modular arsenal. That’s the “grow” part of the consume-grow-upgrade-survive loop.

Don’t mix up the two kinds of growth

  • In-run growth (temporary): eating targets and growing after a boss — reset each run.
  • Between-run unlocks (permanent): vehicles, Artifacts, Captains and modules listed on Steam — they decide how your next run starts.

Plenty of new players conflate the two. How strong each run is depends both on what you ate and on what you unlocked between runs.

A recurring review point: the castle is a build, not a loadout

One detailed review explains the build logic clearly: every new module changes the castle’s weight, firing arcs, center of mass and exposed faces. So the best build isn’t the one with the most weapons, but the one whose weapons agree on where the castle should be. Two example directions from that review (not official, and subject to EA changes):

  • Battleship Broadside: stack heavy side cannons + mortars + rear droppers — soften at range and tear armor from one flank.
  • Arcane Overload: cluster wizard towers + beam refractors + ballistas, finishing with a magic zone plus precision fire.

The same review notes a physics detail: the closer you get to your weight limit, the more ramming and maneuvering punish you — so a bigger castle is not automatically a better castle, and engine/wheel upgrades aren’t optional. These are media hands-on claims, not official numbers.

How to plan a build

There’s no official build guide. A safe approach: build around reliable clearing output first, don’t over-collect. Once you know the core loop, experiment with different openers by combining module combos, growth pacing and between-run unlocks. Community build videos are reference material — note their version and source.

Limits

No official growth numbers, upgrade curve, or build rankings; Early Access keeps iterating and build strength may shift with patches. See weapons and modules for the item list, and captains and unlocks for between-run progression.
