Steam’s store page lists four between-run unlock categories: vehicles, Artifacts, Captains and modules. They’re a different system from “growing bigger in a run” — these are permanent unlocks that decide how your next run starts and what builds you can play.
What each category is
- Vehicles: which moving fortress you start with.
- Artifacts: run-carrying power-up items.
- Captains: commanders that give the castle/crew different abilities.
- Modules: the pool of available weapon/siege modules.
Officially only these four categories and their between-run nature are confirmed — no full roster, numbers or unlock order.
Captains named in a media review (not officially confirmed)
One detailed review names several captains, which helps you picture the system — but these names are media hands-on, not an official roster:
- Norbert: the review’s default starter — an all-rounder that lets you learn weapon placement and enemy behavior first.
- Tank Bert: more forgiving, sustaining health through destruction and damage-over-time — a good pick for a first serious run.
- Fire Wizard: an aggressive fire/DoT playstyle that asks more of your timing, positioning and perk choices.
The review’s takeaway is that these captains are intentionally unequal and serve different playstyles — by design, not a bug.
Don’t take community guesses as official
There are already “best Captain” and “hidden unlock” claims floating around, but no official roster exists. Those are player testing or speculation, not fact, and Early Access may add or change categories.
